The nation’s favourite dessert double act?

According to a poll conducted by Gaviscon Double Action amongst 1,302 over 16s, between the 19th and 23rd June 2009, the nations favourite dessert double act is Apple crumble and custard.

The top ten

1  Apple Crumble and Custard (54%)

2  Strawberries and Cream (47%)

3  Profiteroles with Chocolate Sauce (36%)

4  Chocolate Fudge Cake and Ice-Cream (31%)

5  Lemon Meringue Pie and Ice-Cream (31%)

6  Pancakes and Maple Syrup (28%)

7  Sticky Toffee Pudding and Clotted Cream (27%)

8  Ice cream and chocolate sauce (23%)

9  Treacle Tart and ice cream (22%)

10  Chocolate Brownie and Cream (21%)

Now you don’t have to be Columbo to realise at first glance something isn’t quite right! Let’s start with basic maths and percentages – surely they have to add up to 100, don’t they? Well no, not if you’re allowed to tick as many boxes as you want.

Which brings us to the choices. They lead you to believe that they accosted 1,302 ‘representative’ people at random and gently persuaded them to reveal their favourite dessert that comes with something, with the majority saying, ‘Ooo I love a nice apple crumble and custard’. They didn’t. They sat and scratched their heads and thought: How many dessert double acts can we come up with to tie in with the double action in Gaviscon?, hence the addition of pancakes and maple syrup, when they obviously ran out of things to go with ice cream!

I’m sure, given freedom of choice, a lot of people would choose the apple crumble and custard, but I’m not sure 1,302 people out of 60+million (0.002%), picking from a limited list of choices is a true reflection of this, or any, nation’s favourites.

So I throw down the gauntlet, what is the best dessert double act?

I concur with apple crumble at number one, but – as any epicurean knows – the better half is evaporated milk!

    Nope, it’s clotted cream, actually!

Double cream, I think you both meant. Easy mistake to make.
